Family Support
Family support includes both informal and formal sources of social support for families. Informal support can be provided by relatives (spouse, parents, siblings), friends, neighbors and other community members such as babysitters or home helpers.
Formal supports can include publicly funded entitlement programs and may provide education, housing, daycare, respite care or other services. In addition to these, community organizations and groups can also offer family support through information, advocacy, and parent training.
ED is committed to supporting the efforts of families, educators and local, state, and federal leaders to strengthen family partnerships for student success. Community Resources
Community resources are the building blocks of societal well-being, empowering individuals by providing access to crucial services and opportunities for personal growth. Education resources like schools and libraries enrich learning experiences and promote lifelong learning, while social support services like community centers and volunteer groups break down societal prejudices and foster inclusivity. By working together, these resources form interconnected networks that support and motivate each other, fostering resilient and adaptable societies.
When teaching children about community resources, begin by asking them to name people, places or things that help their local area. You can then guide them to discover these resources by introducing them to a comprehensive community resource guide, such as Journey. Whether run by public service institutions, nonprofit organizations or even businesses, these guides can empower individuals to find the right support for their specific needs.
