The future of education support services will require greater personalization and customization. Learners will want to be able to select their own tutors, mentors, and counselors based on their preferences, needs, and goals. They will also need to be able to adjust the level and frequency of the support they receive based on their feedback and progress. In addition, education support services will need to be accessible and affordable for all learners, especially those from marginalized or underrepresented groups.

The Importance of Schools

A school is a place where people learn. It can also refer to a group of students or a discipline. The words teach, instruct, educate, train, and discipline all have similar meanings.

School is important for kids because it gives them a foundation in life. It also helps them prepare for their future careers.

Learning for its own sake

There’s a growing movement in education to encourage students to learn for their own sake, rather than out of a desire to get good grades or impress peers. This approach is backed by research that shows that intrinsic motivation leads to better academic outcomes.

Interest is a family of emotions that motivate people to engage with unfamiliar topics. It’s one of the earliest emotions to develop, and it can be a powerful motivator for lifelong learning.

When we’re focused on schools as the primary solution to inequality, it’s easy to forget that intellectual pursuits can also be a source of pleasure. The enjoyment that comes from a well-researched paper or the elegance of a math problem can pique student curiosity and inspire creative thinking.

Exposure to a wide variety of subjects

Subjects like history and sociology are crucial for students to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. They provide insights into societal structures, human behaviour and the importance of cultural diversity. Without access to these subjects, young people may grow up with limited empathy and understanding towards others.

Moreover, these subjects foster transferable skills such as collaboration, problem solving and communication, which are increasingly important for careers in the digital economy. This is why schools need to connect the worlds of learning and work for their students – including through careers talks, mentoring programmes and excursions to job sites. By integrating these into the curriculum, students will be ready for the rigours of the modern workplace. Diverse learning environments also encourage innovation by fostering an intellectual melting pot.

Building self-confidence

The ability to build self-confidence is a crucial component of lifelong learning. It is defined as a belief in one’s own worth and capacity to succeed. This confidence enables individuals to tackle challenges and take risks in pursuit of their goals.

A lack of self-confidence can have negative impacts on student performance, including anxiety and social isolation. It can also interfere with learning by limiting classroom engagement and lowering the ability to focus.

To help students develop a positive sense of self-worth, teachers can provide encouragement and support. They can also encourage students to set realistic goals and break them down into manageable steps. This approach can help students feel a sense of accomplishment each time they reach one of these milestones, which in turn boosts their confidence.

Developing life skills

Schools have a responsibility to prepare their students for the world outside of the classroom. Life skills are a crucial part of that preparation. These skills can help students become more independent, manage their emotions, and make responsible decisions.

Developing life skills through schooling is also important for pupils’ social development, health, and well-being. It is a way for them to learn how to live with others (cognitive development), deal with their emotions and behaviours in a group or society (emotional development), and build supportive relationships with their peers and family.

This scoping review analysed 55 publications from English and French that provide conceptual definitions of Life Skills in the context of research on health promotion at school. It is possible that a consensual definition of Life Skills is not yet available because this topic sits at the intersection of different fields.

Continuing your education as an adult

Whether you want to finish a degree that you began as a teenager, or are thinking about making a career change, there are many options for adults looking to learn. Adult learning can provide a new sense of purpose and increased self-esteem, as well as a more diversified skill set that may boost your income.

Schools can be government run, known as public or state schools, or private, which charge tuition. They can also be religious, such as gurukula (Hindu schools), madrasa (Islamic school), hawzas (Shi’i Muslim school) or yeshivas (Jewish school).

Research has shown that participation in education in adulthood leads to a higher earning potential and greater access to employment opportunities. However, the likelihood of educational participation varies by a number of factors including age, gender, and early life context.

Kindergarten – A Year of Wonder and Joy

Kindergarten is a year of wonder and joy. Children learn in a variety of ways, including physical development, language and literacy development, cognitive development, and creative expression.

In addition to traditional learning, children also develop a range of other skills that help them thrive in the classroom. For example, they often learn to recognize and write the letters of their name through a weekly reading routine.

Social and Emotional Development

While kindergarten is a time for children to learn their ABCs and 123s, it’s also a time for them to develop social emotional learning skills. These are the skills that help kids build healthy relationships and become independent learners.

These skills include forming close and trustworthy friendships, appropriately expressing a wide range of emotions, and enjoying interactions with new people and exploring unfamiliar environments. Teachers can support this development by using literature to teach about characters that kindergarteners can identify with, and by incorporating story-based activities in the classroom that build students’ empathy and sharing skills.

Teaching social-emotional skills can be a challenge for early childhood teachers. However, many studies show that young children’s social and emotional skills are more important than their reading ability. To help teachers develop a social-emotional curriculum for kindergarten, the Penn GSE team has created a toolkit called Conquering Kindergarten that includes scientifically valid measures of 14 different social-emotional skills.

Language and Literacy Development

During kindergarten, children develop emergent literacy skills that are the foundation for reading and writing. These skills are receptive (the ability to listen and understand language) and expressive (the ability to communicate their ideas and feelings through speech).

Emerging literacy skills include alphabet knowledge, rhyming awareness, phonemic awareness, print awareness, and vocabulary. These skills are largely influenced by the interaction children have with adults. For example, a teacher might read books to kids or ask them to identify all the signs that have writing on them to promote print awareness.

Students who enter kindergarten with large vocabularies tend to be better readers. Teachers can help kids build their vocabularies by reading books in their home language with them and by sending them home with L1 text. Parents and caregivers can also support children’s English literacy development by continuing nightly shared reading practices at home. This helps children see reading as fun and motivating, rather than an intimidating academic skill.

Cognitive Development

As kids move into kindergarten, their bodies and minds undergo tremendous changes. Although each child develops according to their own unique timeline, there are certain core cognitive milestones they must hit. These are important because they prepare children for a life of learning and set them up to succeed in their educational journeys.

Children develop their thinking (cognitive) skills by observing the world around them, trying new things, and comparing information. This includes their ability to focus and to understand the relationships between objects. In high-quality kindergarten programs, children learn to use their imaginations and approach problems creatively.

For example, by combining movement with maths games children strengthen their coordination and concentration. Activities such as solving puzzles compel children to strategize, enhance spatial awareness, and build problem-solving abilities. Similarly, simple counting activities improve numeracy skills and lay the foundation for future mathematical thinking. Additionally, art-based activities encourage children to categorize, sort, and group objects. In addition, tracing shapes and patterns builds fine motor skills and attention to detail.

Independent and Self-Assurance

Independence and self-assurance are vital to a child’s development, especially in kindergarten. It is during this time when children can build a foundation that will last them throughout their academic career and beyond.

Providing children with opportunities to explore their surroundings, make choices, and face the consequences cultivates independence. This also promotes a strong sense of self-worth, fostering a desire to learn and grow.

When children are able to solve their own problems, they develop much-needed critical thinking skills. This ability to think independently helps kids to tackle difficult situations later in life, empowering them to thrive even when faced with challenges.

Help kids to gain independence by assigning age-appropriate chores, allowing them to choose their own activities, and offering free play time. This will give them the chance to practice and perfect their decision-making, and they can learn how to power through frustration when they run into a roadblock – a lesson well worth milk spills and mismatched socks!

The Importance of Reading Intervention

Reading intervention is often a part of a school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). The goal of reading intervention is to improve students’ reading skills, especially for those who are struggling.

Research shows that individualized reading interventions can help students achieve more than non-individualized instruction. They can include instruction in foundational skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency), comprehension, or both.

Comprehension

Comprehension is essential if reading is to have a purpose and if readers are to learn from text. Readers bring a wide range of cognitive abilities, language knowledge and skills, motivations, and background knowledge to reading, all of which impact comprehension.

While research on foundational and phonological skills has focused primarily on how to teach those skills, little attention has been given to teaching comprehension strategies. This is partly because comprehension has been described as a higher-level thinking skill that is not necessarily based on decoding or fluency skills.

Interventions that are individualized for comprehension have been shown to improve comprehension outcomes. However, the moderator effects for individualized interventions vary across studies in terms of how much of the instruction is individualized and what aspects of instruction are individualized. Interventions that are multicomponent have also been shown to improve comprehension outcomes, although their effect sizes are not as consistent as those from individualized interventions. Group size was a significant moderator of comprehension outcomes, with smaller groups showing larger effect sizes.

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read at a speed that allows children to allocate their mental resources to understanding the meaning of text. Children who are fluent readers can visualize a story, anticipate what will happen next, laugh at jokes, and make inferences. They can also make connections between ideas and identify themes.

Several studies have investigated the effects of various instructional routines on reading fluency, including teacher modeling and peer-mediated repeated reading in matched-reading-ability pairs. However, two fundamental questions remain: 1) the dimensionality of text reading fluency including text reading efficiency (accuracy and speed) and reading prosody, and 2) the directionality of the relation between text reading fluency and reading comprehension.

Explicit instruction should target all components of fluency, such as articulation, phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, and vocabulary. It should also build morphological awareness through the teaching of prefixes, suffixes, and base words, helping students pull apart and define words that do not follow traditional patterns.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of the most critical components of reading. When a reader encounters a new word in a text, they must know what the word means in order to read it and understand its meaning. This requires a large vocabulary that can quickly infer the meaning of unfamiliar words based on their context and existing knowledge. Vocabulary weaknesses contribute significantly to reading difficulties and can exacerbate existing differences between students.

As a speech language pathologist, you can help children with vocabulary difficulties by providing specific vocabulary instruction and ensuring that your students receive explicit, systematic, cumulative, diagnostic and responsive instruction. You can also use vocabulary-building activities that are appropriate to the students’ age and abilities.

Explicit vocabulary instruction should be embedded within curriculum-based activities and should focus on high-frequency words, domain-specific words and key words in the content area. You should also provide explicit instruction on the words with multiple meanings to ensure that students are able to differentiate between them.

Spelling

While the National Reading Panel omitted spelling from its list of essential components of literacy instruction (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension), research has shown that both spelling and reading rely on the same core knowledge — that the letters represent speech sounds.

For this reason, many of the same strategies that improve phonological awareness and phonics also improve spelling and reading. These include teaching students the phonograms and graphemes of high-frequency words, focusing on syllabication, encouraging students to practice breaking longer words into syllables both verbally and in writing, and offering explicit, systematic spelling instruction that incorporates both vocabulary and grammar.

Several studies have found that spelling intervention programs with intensive instruction and regular practice result in improved spelling outcomes for children with learning disabilities.
